Scripture: John 5: 1-9

Recap:

  • Jesus chooses to go to the pools of Bethseda before heading to the temple. He chose to go where there was sickness, pain, and injustice rather than looking away.
  • Jesus stops, sees, and shows compassion and healing to this man that others overlooked.
  • But, Jesus did not heal everyone by the pool. He just healed one man.
  • If you are actively wrestling with the question “Why does God heal some people but not others?” expressing anger and grief is a very faithful way to engage God.
  • If you are not actively asking that question, perhaps God is inviting you to choose back into believing that sometimes God does heal and to start praying with more hope for God to move.

Discussion Questions:

  • Read the scripture passage again. What sticks out to you about how Jesus engages in this story?
  • When was a time in your life that God answered your prayer in the way you hoped?
  • When was a time in your life that you were disappointed with God not answering your prayer in the way you hoped for?
  • What is something that you is going on in your life right now that you wish God would heal or fix? Could you take a small step to pray with hope for God’s work in that area today?
