Scripture: John 4: 4-42

Recap:

  • The Samaritan woman had experienced a fair amount of trauma- both personally and because of her people’s history.

  • As a Samaritan, this woman had experienced harsh judgement and ostracism because of the way she practiced her faith, and she brings her anger and hurt and hard questions to Jesus.

  • She asks the Messiah to settle the theological debate between Jews and Samaritans, and instead Jesus gives her a third way. True worshippers worship in spirit and in truth.

  • Often, instead of giving us answers we are looking for, God offers us his presence. He pursues us and meets us where we are.

Discussion Questions:

  • What about the story of the woman at the well resonates with you?

  • Have your past experiences with other people made you hesitant or jaded towards other people or towards God? What has helped you soften again?

  • What are you longing for Jesus to make right?

  • At the end of the sermon, Pastor Suzanne talked about the promise of God’s pursuit and presence with us as we wrestle. When have you needed that personally? Who is on your mind to be praying for that is in that type of a season right now?
