Scripture: John 1: 43-50

Recap:

  • When Philip goes to get Nathaniel to tell him about Jesus, Nathaniel is immediately suspicious, and goes to question Jesus for himself.
  • Jesus sees Nathaniel coming and engages with him really graciously.
  • Jesus is not rattled by Nathaniel’s skepticism, he welcomes it. Nathaniel’s skepticism does not disqualify him from following Jesus.
  • We are invited, even encouraged, to bring all of our skepticism, hard questions, and honest engagement to Jesus.

Discussion Questions:

  • What was your experience of questioning things about your faith when you were younger? Was that allowed?
  • What, do you imagine, was underneath Nathaniel’s skepticism about Jesus?
  • What things have bothered you about your faith? What questions have you had?
  • Jesus responds really generously to Nathaniel - proving that he already knew and loved Nathaniel. How do you imagine Jesus would describe you or respond to you if you came to him with questions?
  • What makes it hard to bring your questions, skepticism, or frustration to Jesus now?
