1/5 Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Suzanne shared the unfortunate statistic that only 6% of people actually accomplish their New Year’s goals and resolutions. As we look at our goals of building our bridges to God, Self, and Others we are going to look at the strategies used by Nehemiah to practically build something so that we can realistically achieve our goals.
  • Nehemiah was called by God to return to Jerusalem during the Israelites’ exile to help rebuild the wall around the city.
  • The first thing that Nehemiah does to prepare for that call is to “sit down and weep” - to let himself feel the pain of the walls disrepair to fuel the motivation for his work.
  • The next thing he does is to go to God in prayer to ask for help in his task.
  • As you consider where God might be calling you in this season, spend a few moments letting yourself feel the weight of need and ask God for help in moving towards rebuilding your bridges.

Reflection Questions

  • If you haven’t yet, spend 5-10 minutes identifying which of your bridges (to God, to yourself, or to others) might be where God is calling you to focus for the next year.
  • Where are you feeling struggle, pain, or dissatisfaction because that area of your life has not gotten enough attention? Where might others around you be affected because you have not given attention to that bridge?
  • What do you hope for as you seek to give attention to this area of your life in the next year?
  • Spend 5-10 minutes asking God for help. Name where you think you will struggle. Ask for wisdom and courage and perseverance.
